Repair Glycation products in tissues?

Hi, just joined. I'll have a proper look later when I get the chance but I just wanted to get this post up before I forget and so I can feel like I actually made some progress on this topic before I had to move on.
Are there any treatments\drugs\etc which do or even might repair the damage of AGEs, even if only in certain tissues? They obviously have a big negative effect in the body but I only just found out they contribute to the permanent weakening\stiffening of tendons and it scared me a bit as my Life Plan relies on me being physically capable til my 60's.
Thanks

  • I've to refresh my knowledge about other treatments but what comes to mind immediately is shock treatments. Heat shock and cold shock treatments.

That refers to things like hot pools, saunas, steam rooms, and a dip in a swimming pool during winter, these sort of things.

You can Google "heat shock treatment" and read the research.

Or you can just take my word for it and start doing shock treatments immediately.

It's not like you're going to harm yourself as long as you've got some common sense and you are not going to stay inside a sauna until you pass out.

I haven't found much about reversal of AGEs but there is plenty to know about prevention.  There are two research papers from 2015 that claim cataracts can be reversed.  A board certified ophthalmologist in my area states that "sometimes" it can be reversed.

Life Extension Advocacy Foundation published this article last year: https://www.lifespan.io/news/reversal-of-two-advanced-glycation-end-products-achieved/

As far as prevention goes, there is much that can be done:

    1. Get  blood sugar levels lower - both fasting (down to 85 like mine would be nice) and post meal blood sugar levels also (no higher than 120 would be nice which I struggle with).  I bought a glucose meter, the stick your finger kind, and have monitored my blood sugar level after I ate various foods.  I thought I had a good diet for low blood sugar but I was eating oatmeal with blueberries in the morning and the combination made my blood sugar spike.  Either alone was fine but not together.  Also I ate a banana at supper which spiked my blood sugar so I now longer eat bananas (I have not eaten bread or fine ground grains for a long time but these are also a problem.). I am not diabetic but I take metformin for it's antiaging effects which includes the lowering of blood sugar.  If I don't keep my blood sugar levels down, I am not doing everything I can to live longer and live healthier IMHO. (Side benefit:  chronic inflammation is bad for health and living longer - blood sugar creates some of that inflammation - so when you lower the blood sugar all the time - a person will be healthier.)

    2. Get all AGEs out of your diet - basically this means eat no food that is cooked higher than boiling.  Definitely don't eat any food that is browned in the cooking process - like broiled, braised, deep fried or barbecued meat, don't eat bread crust,  etc.  If it turns brown it is bad.  I have no problem with this.  Except for overnight soaked uncooked oat meal, and some steamed green vegetables, my wife and I eat everything else raw.  We don't eat meat, fish, poultry, dairy, etc.

    3.  I take two supplements which are supposed to help prevent AGEs, l-carnosine and pyridoxamine.  There me others but these are what I se.

    4. Since April 2020, I take two types of eyedrops - one contains 4% n-acetyl-l-carnosine and other also contains n-acetyl-l-carnosine plus some other supplements good for the eye which include l-carnosine, glutathione, cysteine ascorbate, l-taurine, and riboflavin mono-phosphate.

I have spent some time looking for information about AGEs.  I didn't even know hardly anything aboug AGEs until I read Dr. Sandra Kaufmann's book - The Kaufmann Protocol.  I take most of the supplements that she recommends in this book.  I like her book a lot and her presentations as well (search with her name on Youtube to find some).

  • Thanks for your answer. Have you ever thought about using Insulin? Although fasting Blood Sugars doesn't seem to be a problem for you, I know some Anti-Ageing people are recommending a long acting Insulin before bed in order to get them perfect rather than High-Normal. It might be more than it's worth for you but maybe a tiny amount of short acting post meal would do the trick for you. My understanding is, exogenous insulin means your body has to produce less so you're actually giving your a pancreas a 'rest' rather than reducing it's efficiency etc.
