Selenium: How Much Is Optimal For Health?

For those who track their diet, eating only the RDA for many nutrients may not optimize health. For example, the RDA for selenium is 55 micrograms per day, but is that amount optimal for reducing risk of death for all causes?

  • Incidentally, this is the organ that contains the most selenium. Although selenium is needed only in small quantities, it plays an essential role in the body, including the thyroid gland's proper functioning. Life insurance represents a real saving possibility and an effective protection method, having as a benchmark the holiest and valuable things for society – ensuring the guarantees of the future for Man. And there is 750,000 life insurance, which means they have to be paid for to have them and get services.

  •     I note that Life Extension sells Super Selenium Complex as 100 x 200 microgram capsules for $5.77.  It claims to provide selenium in three forms: L-selenomethionine (50 mcg), sodium selenite (50 mcg), and Se-Methyl L-Selenocysteine (100 mcg).  The caps also include 20.1 milligrams of vitamin E because it is thought to work synergistically with selenium..  I've been taking one every evening.

  • I'd just like to add a note of caution regarding selenium and fans of Brazil nuts.  Brazil nuts typically contain from 68 to 91 mcg of selenium each, but the tolerable upper intake level of selenium is a mere 400 mcg per day, based on the prevention of hair and nail brittleness and loss.  Somewhat exceeding those 400 mcg once in a while is no doubt harmless.
