Kidney Function Declines During Aging-Can It Be Reversed?

In the video:

Data for changes in kidney function during aging, kidney function values that are associated with an increased risk of death for all causes

What's my data for kidney function, 2006 - 2020?

Can diet impact kidney function?

Within my data, which foods are correlated with good kidney function?

How are the individual components of these foods (fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids) correlated with kidney function?

      What were your egfr numbers?

I've been on Rapa weekly 5-7mg for 23 months.  GFR out of nowhere dropped from 60 to 26 over 6 months.  Diagnosed as an acute kidney injury non traumatic.  Having a kidney biopsy this week to find out problem.  Stopped Rapa 2 months ago out of caution

Did some research and found a study where 11 people with pre-existing kidney disease (GN) were given Rapa 5 mg DAILY. Over half became renal toxic with dropping GFR. They were given transplant dose to try to achieve level of 15ng/dl.  Stopped rapa and the gfr came back to baseline after several months

The study postulated that in case where pre-existing Kidney GN that Rapa exascerbates

the problem by shutting off Mtor 1which is needed by the kidney to regenerate the kidney filtering tubes.  Interesting thing was the same dose helps transplanted kidney.

Dr. Richard Miller mentioned on the recent Dr. Peter Attia podcast, that the elderly (treatment started at human equivalent age 60) mice treated with rapamycin had several internal organs that were like young mice. The organs were very different than untreated elderly mice.

Paul Beauchemin I just found the information about the internal organs of the rapamycin treated mice (In the section of the podcast starting at 1:59:30):

      "

        • Their tendons were youthful.
        • Their kidneys were youthful.
        • They did not have changes in the heart.
        • They did not have changes in the endometrium.
        • They did not have changes in the liver.
        • And they did not have changes in the adrenal that were characteristic of 22 month old control mice"

I am almost 56 yo male now. 3 yrs ago, at 53, eGFR was 103. Last month it was 95. The graph would suggest I am a approx. 30 yrs old, which is non sensical. My DnaAge blood DNA epigenetic test from 6 months ago reported 52 yr old. My diet is strict keto (plant based, MUFA, PUFA, nuts, avocado, EVOO), tons of leafy non carby veggies, and wild bison, wild salmon, wild shrimp, sardines. And I also overlay one meal a day fasting protocol. Clearly, this dietary/fasting protocol is super healthy for the kidney, and dosen't appear to hurt my epigenetic age. Thanks for sharing this interesting data Michael.

    Im CKD (Non Diabate) patient.

I have changed my diet to LCHF and fasting OMAD since Nov 20 after one month I have checked and found that my egfr reduce significantly assume that its about acid from fasting, lchf impact to my kidney.(Its my fault to not aware about the way to manage acid especially if you are CKD patient, There are sign eg; hurt kidney position after I ate high animal fat)

Now im looking for Rapamycin to try if it may help to improve my egfr after read experience from Paul Beauchemin

Anyway, right now very concern after read Edward Meininger experience that got worst after taken Rapa.

I will try with low dose first and will closely monitor egfr in weekly if lab result is worsten I will stop immediately.

    Hope miracle will happend.

Sorry to hear of your CKD, any idea cause?

Your switch to LCHF/OMAD, was that doctor mediated or on your own? There's a big difference between plant fat and animal fat based LCHF. I do strictly plant fat based LCHF. If your kidney function has been further compromised on your diet/fasting change, clearly you should have it checked out by your doctor.

I started 4 mg/weekly Rapamycin last month, will do a first lab panel at 3 months, will be tracking kidney function amongst others. Will circle back.

MAC I assume that my CKD come from Nephrotoxic first found proteinuria then HBP what doctor gave me is Enarapril to control BP.

I try Fastng/OMAD/LCHF (animal fat) by myself As I saw some improvement with other CKD on youtube. As we know for CKD it is irreverible so I just want to try.

In my opinion, I think it work well with diabate CKD to solve problem about insulin resistance but for other type of CKD you need to be careful because it make too acid to your kidney.

I change back to plant base diet with limited meat.

Rapamycin is my plan to try with 3mg/week.

  • Has anyone had a biopsy confirmed Kidney FSGS and went on or continued on a low dose Rapamycin?  Dose and protocol?

Almost 2 years on low dose 3-7mg weekly rapamycin.  GFR started to go south last June 2020 and went from 60 to 26 then bounced to 29. Stopped rapamycin and metformin 3 months ago.  A recent kidney biopsy confirmed my Kidney FSGS.

Conflicting research on low dose rapa with FSGS.  Trying to decide if I should go back on Rapa.

BTW I had tested my biological age just before the kidney issues. Had me at 61 years old and I am 70 so Rapa was working.
