Is spontaneous hair colour restoration normal?

So, I am a 44yo male with a speckling of grey hair, and I have been taking a mix of compounds that are often discussed in the forums. I started in about mid-January this year.

Over the last few weeks, I have noticed some grey hairs in my beard that looks strange. The tip is clearly grey, but all the regrowth is black, like the surrounding hair. Judging by the length of regrowth, it roughly coincides with when I started taking my supplement mixture.

As I wasn't on the lookout for such an effect earlier, I have no idea if it was already occurring naturally before I started taking the supplements.  I also don't know if colour restoration even occurs spontaneously naturally.

Has anyone else had this experience, either naturally or with supplements?

SCOTT WEANER The usual mix I would guess?

CaAKG, NAC and Glycine daily. On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, I take Fisetin, 3 days in a row. On the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month, Rapa.

The fisetin is real, not the stuff from Amazon etc. I have tested that stuff in the lab and it's always less than 50% of the amount on the label, sometimes less than 1%

SCOTT WEANER I found a supplier in China, and I lave access to a lab (I'm trained as an organic chemist). By UV-VIS and HLPC, it looked to by the 98% purity they claimed.

I did side-by-side testing with a few brands from Amazon at the same time (from brands available in Europe), and none were what they claimed.

As Fisetin is extracted from natural sources, I assume the brands on Amazon use semi-refined material, where the Fisetin content is about 40-50%. They then sell that as "100% Fisetin powder", which is only 'technically' true (i.e. 100% powder containing 40% Fisetin).

Others have fine-print where they describe their product as equivalent to 1200mg of Fisetin. Those contained a tiny amount of Fisetin in oil, which they claim is 'liposomal'. I have personally prepared liposomes during my chemistry PhD, and they did not look the same as the content of these 'Fisetin' capsules.

David Ng What dosages are you using of the supplements you mentioned?  I wonder ... could there be a connection between dosage and what you've observed?

I follow the GlyNAC protocol from human studies but at about 1/2 the dosage (the participants were between 70-80, and I'm only mid-forties). I throw in about 2g of CaAAKG too, as alpha-ketoglutarate is safe and has some great scientific studies.

For the Fisetin, it's 3 days at 1.5g per day. Rapa is 10mg.

As for the grey hair in my beard, I can only find two now, down from a dozen in January. The grey hair at my temples doesn't show the same effects. It's very curious...

I've heard and seen hair from someone claiming spontaneous hair color restoration from CaAKG.  His hair was white but it had red-brownish streaks that just spontaneously appeared after taking CaAKG.

  • You can actually take 10mg of rapa and not get mouth sores?

Stevan Lieberman I have two brands from two suppliers from India. 10mg from either doesn't give me mouth sores, but does give me upset bowels for a day or so after ingestion.

Stevan Lieberman I sourced the Fisetin from a supplier in China after finding the stuff on Amazon is really bad quality. As the minimum quantity is quite high, it's not so economical to buy. The minimum quantity is 100 grams, and the FedEx shipping is high. Also, I would prefer to test each batch individually! Anything going into my body is going to be tested first, and I don't trust the supplier enough to always ship the same quality material.

I'm planning on getting a larger batch (several kilos), doing a full set of lab tests on it here in Germany, and offering it for sale later this year. The initial plan was just to get a large batch for friends and family, but as people keep asking where to get pure, lab tested Fisetin, it seems I may as well offer it myself.

This isn't supposed to be a place to advertise, so I won't mention more details. PM me if you want more information.

Went to have a shave, and I decided to snip a few grey-to-black beard hair to record some data.

Here are two, root-end on the left (thicker), tip on the right (very fine). Both have about 6-7mm of grey at the tip, before regrowing in black. I will throw them under the microscope later, to see what the transition zone looks like.

  • I noticed something similar when I started to take spermidine. Actually it was my daughter who noticed it. She said "Dad your hair is more brown now". After the initial observations there has been no more progress. So the total effect is quite small.

  • I have been trying out various things over the past couple of years and in fact I have had a very gradual colouring of part of my hair, but more recently it has accelerated.

I think I understand the theoretical underpinning, but I want to study it more.  What I have not yet seen (in the most recent iteration) is a white hair turning dark.  I have seen lots of dark hairs growing from the start.

  • After 18 months of liposomal fisetin 2500 mg weekly, my hair is growing in much darker, and overall my hairappearance is approximately that at age 60... I'm now 75.  Note that my peridontal disease scores have returned to normal at the dentist, and my spinal BMD scores have returned from T=-1 to T=0 on DEXA scan
