The "Reprogramming" of Aging Cells

Researchers associated with the company Turn.bio have a new publication that describes the "reprogramming" and rejuvenation of aging cell cultures by infusing them with a "cocktail" of six different messenger RNA types that generate the "reset" proteins OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, c-MYC, LIN28 and NANOG (OSKMLN).  The link to the paper is HERE.

They suggest an ex vivo treatment in which stem cells could be removed from a subject along with fat cells, separated and treated externally with the mRNA cocktail to rejuvenate the stem cells, and then re-injecting the treated cells into the subject.  In the longer term, they may be investigating an in vivo  procedure that might involve encasing the mRNA in lipid nanoparticles, infusing this into the bloodstream, and directly reprogramming cells in a living organism.

  • I've read about this before on Betteraging, and it sounds absolutely insane (in a good way, of course). I'm wondering about the clinical implication though, and ethical issues this may arise. I'll keep following closely

      Blood Protiens and Age

The blood protein study done by a Stanford group and published in Nature gives the following twenty blood proteins as those with the highest correlations with calendar age.  The "Age Coeff" column gives a relative indication of how strong the correlation is.  Positive coefficients mean that those proteins grow in concentration with increasing age, and negative coefficients mean that those proteins decrease in concentration with increasing age.  Note that only four of the top twenty are negative.

Probably why so many drugs and supplements show evidence of minor life extension.

  • Several studies have found that transfusing blood from young mice to older ones could reverse some signs of aging. Until a few days, it was unclear what component in the blood leads to such a significant effect.  But according to new study hundreds of blood proteins responsible for determining some signs of aging.
