Metformin and alcohol

Hello-new to this forum but glad to be here.
I recently started taking Metformin 500mg 1xday and am tolerating it well. I have found a number of articles and warnings about drinking when taking this but they all apply to those with diabetes. I do NOT  have diabetes and am wondering if the warnings still apply.  To clarify, I’m a social drinker and only on weekends, but an afternoon on the sandbar could mean a few, or more, drinks in one day. 
Does anyone have any experience with this?
